I guess you wouldn’t think that radio frequency energy would be making waves in the beauty industry? But, it is. A device that uses RFE is being used in the Thermalcool procedure. If you don’t know what Thermacool is, then you haven’t had your ear to the station. Thermacool is the new non-surgical procedure that gives men and women a healthy alternative to surgical facelifts. The process tightens your skin by contracting the deep layers of skin. Thermacool is also known on the market as Thermalift and Thermage. Let’s call it Thermacool because it sounds hip.

60-Year Old Lynn Shores had a treatment six months ago and is looking forward to having another one in about three more months. She says, “I was looking twice my age! I had the procedure done because I wanted to look younger and prettier in my face.” Shores began to see results about two months after having the treatment. She is among a growing number of people who believe the benefits of Thermacool far outweigh the risks. Thermacool may cause some discomfort but the risk of surgery, anesthesia and scarring are less than with surgical procedures. In fact, some people say the procedure really doesn’t hurt that much at all.

So you may be wondering how does it work? It takes anywhere from thirty to forty five minutes to complete the Thermacool procedure. Most patients’ only need a topical anesthetic cream placed on the face. Your technician will do that about an hour before the treatment is scheduled to begin. Other people may need Valium or some other kind of oral sedative. “I was just so jittery about having it done, says 35 year old Marc Thompson. As I mentioned, Thermacool uses radio frequency energy to apply heat under the epidermis or top layer of the skin. The heat is applied directly into the dermis layer. The dermis layer is right under the epidermis. I could feel a warming on my face. It felt unusual. I couldn’t do anything but lay still,” says Tonya Morgan.

You’ll want to lay still too as the heat causes the tissue in the dermis layer to warm up. This controlled heating of deeper layers of skin and tissue causes the skin to contract and tighten. This is known as volumetric tissue heating. There is some pain every time there is a pulse, but a cooling spray brings some relief after each pulse.

The volumetric tissue heating causes the collagen underneath the skin tissue to contract and shrink. At the same time, the top layer of the skin is kept cool by cryogen cooling. Cryogen cooling keeps the temperature on the surface of the skin cool while the dermis tissues are heated up. The heating action causes two reactions. The first result is an increased thickness in the top layer of skin. It’s the heating that actually causes works to reduce the wrinkles.

The second result is collagen remolding and the production of new collagen. The skin continues to tighten over time as the skin heals. You may be able to see a difference in your appearance immediately. However, it takes most people up to six months to see a difference. It is possible for the procedure to be repeated again after six months. You should let your technicians take before and after pictures to help you see any subtle changes.

Now, you’re probably wondering whether Thermacool, Thermage and Thermalift are right for you. Patient’s who live on a pacemaker cannot undergo the procedure; it’s just too risky. You may want to pass on the procedure if your skin is really, really loose. Surgery may be your only hope. However, Thermacool works best in combination with laser treatments, Botox, resytlane, and collagen injections. Traditional eye, forehead and eyebrow surgeries also work well with Thermacool.

Research shows Thermacool works! If it didn’t the FDA wouldn’t have given it a nod. Patients wouldn’t have issued a strong endorsement either. “I’ve never felt better about myself. I know most people would be afraid to try a procedure like this, but not me! I’m all for looking younger and healthier. The best part is how good I feel about me,” says Shores.

Do You Really Need To Wear A Moisturizer?

You just may be able to get away without using a moisturizer.

“Not everyone needs or should use a moisturizer, especially women with oily, combination, or acne-prone skin!” Paula Begoun, author of Don’t Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me, writes on her website. But what if you just can’t part with your favorite day and night creams? What should you be looking for when shopping for a moisturizer?

According to Paula, a good moisturizer should contain emollients (essential for making skin not feel dry), water-binding agents (ingredients that attract water to the skin and help keep it there), anti-irritants and antioxidants. For daytime, it must contain a well-formulated sunscreen.

If you have an oily t-zone area (forehead, nose and cheeks) and your skin is normal to dry elsewhere on your face, you have combination skin. Most of us will have combination skin at some point in our lives. Use an oil-free moisturizer in the t-zone and a light moisturizer on other areas. In order to normalize your skin, it may be necessary to apply two different types of products on the different areas of your skin. Alternatively, you can skip the moisturizer for your t-zone entirely and just moisturize the cheeks and eyes.

If you have dry skin, your skin may feel dry and itchy and wrinkles are more obvious on your skin than other skin types. Although the use of a moisturizer can help to temporarily smooth out wrinkles, none of them can turn back the clock. Choose one which makes your skin look smooth and feel supple. A water-based moisturizer is preferable, although it won’t last as long as an oil-based moisturizer. However, emollients in water-based moisturizers such as plant oils and shea butter can help to provide your skin with essential moisture. (Tip: Apply moisturizer on damp skin to lock in moisture.)

If you have sensitive skin, you may have red patches on your face and/or are easily irritated by using certain products. It can be difficult to find a product which doesn’t aggravate your skin and cause breakouts or unsightly rashes. Look for moisturizers which do not contain fragrance and ingredients which you know can be potentially irritating to your skin. Even something as harmless as Aloe Vera can cause skin irritations!

Sunscreens are essential for daytime wear to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays. There are plenty of sunscreens on the market which hydrate the skin as well as protect the skin from the harmful rays of the sun. Why not skip the moisturizer and wear a sunscreen instead? The fewer products on your skin, the less likely your skin will develop an irritation to any of the ingredients.

Curls Are Back In for Spring 2005!

Whether you have loose curls or tight coily locks you will definately be the talk of the town this spring!

We can see the evidence of the popularity of curls at the recent Golden Globe Awards. There were many celebrities sporting curls at this years gala event.

Halle Berry wore a loose French twist lightly curled in an updo. A very simple, yet elegant style. The list went on of celebs taking their straight hair and adding a little flare with curls. Best supporting film actress Natalie Portman's shoulder-length, naturally beautiful curls with bangs made her a star that night.

Our lovely "Desperate Housewives" Teri Hatcher, Eva Longoria, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross and Nicolette Sheridan of Desperate Housewives looked lavishing in their loosely tousled waves. 2005 is said to be the Year of the Curl! No straight styles were seen at this years star studded event. Curls are back with a vengeance!

If you need some assistance maintaining the shiny glow of your curly ques, here are some tips:

Using the right hair cutting technique is extremely important when cutting curly hair. It's important to cut the hair in a way that creates the right amount of volume without the frizzies. It is also very important to go to the right salon and to a stylist who is experienced in working with curly hair.

To create a sassy hairstyle, simply wash hair and towel dry or use a diffuser. Once the hair is almost dry use a moisturizing product that is not too heavy and run fingers through hair to add more volume. Let hair air dry and style as desired with your fingers. If you use a brush or comb you may add too much frizz.

Give your curls a hot oil treatment every 2-3 weeks to add moisture to the hair. It is especially necessary to do this during the colder months where hair can become dry and brittle. Counter it with a hot oil treatment. The heat opens up the inner cortex and penetrates the hair shaft. You can find this product at your local drug store. A good hot oil treatment is Alberto VO5 Hot oil treatment. Each tube is 14 ml. It claims that if used regularly, it will lead to 55% stronger hair.

Get regular trims every 8 weeks to rid your curls of unsightly, stringy ends. Ensure that you visit a stylist that knows how to cut and style curly hair.

Add a touch of essential oils like avocado, coconut, jojoba or olive oil to your hair. This can be a great conditioning regimen to do prior to shampooing the hair. Place any of the above mentioned oils into the hair and place the hair in a bun for about 20 minutes. You can even wrap your hair under a plastic cap covered by a heat cap for added conditioning. You’ll find that your curls will be more revived and manageable.

Peter Tobinelli sat in his office contemplating what he should do. He founded Tobinelli Construction almost 20 years ago and since that time, the firm had grown into a 75-person construction company serving the retail market sector almost exclusively. The firm had a good reputation, a solid client base with a good backlog, and very low employee turnover. So, what was his problem?

Overall performance at the firm was mediocre over the last few years. After evaluating the situation, Tobinelli understood that he had a corps group of employees who were great performers. They were able to motivate themselves, communicated well with their clients, and were just great to be around.

Unfortunately, for Tobinelli, much of his time had been spent putting out fires often created from the 20% of the employees who were not contributing much to the bottom line. It is not like Tobinelli and his management team didn't try to motivate this group. After all, they had invested a small fortune in training programs, focus groups, and executive coaches. This made their poor results even more frustrating.

Tobinelli ultimately decided that life was too short. He and his management team invested way too much time and money into people who would never get it and they decided to ask these people to leave. This was not an easy decision for Tobinelli. As founder and President, he often felt personally responsible for the pay checks and lives of his employees. This time, however, he was thinking about the group of key people who do a great job for the firm each day. They have a right to see the firm perform well.

After making the cuts, Tobinelli's firm went from 75 to 60. Although he was worried that this may hurt morale and client service, he soon realized that he did the right thing. Many of the people remaining were wondering why these changes hadn't been done sooner. Profits increased, Tobinelli had far fewer personnel headaches and looked forward to coming to work each day. It was fun because he was able to spend more time with people who actually wanted to be there.

One year later, the firm had added an additional five people. This time, however, Tobinelli and his team were really careful during the hiring process. Tobinelli himself was involved with each hire to make sure each person was a cultural fit. If their values and the firm's values were not in alignment, they didn't make the hire. This process took more time and a greater investment in recruiting, but Tobinelli found that it was worth it considering the costs and stress incurred from poor hiring in the past.

Update Your Business Documents! Legal Changes For October 2008

Each year, October is usually the month when a wide variety of changes to employment, company and trading law are rolled out. Many of these of are small changes, and many more will not be applicable to your particular business, but be careful - getting caught out by the changes could lead to a serious legal headache. Companies should review the changes carefully and make sure all their legal and business documents, (including trading and employment contracts) are in line with the new regulations.

Changes to Employment Law

One of the changes to employment law is that the minimum wage has increased:

-16 to 17 year olds must now be paid a minimum of £3.53 per hour

-18 to 21 year olds must now be paid a minimum of £4.77 per hour

-Those over 21 must now be paid a minimum of £5.73 per hour

These increases have taken effect from October 1st, so make sure your employment contracts (and of course your workers' pay cheques!) have been updated to be in line with the new amounts.

There have also been important changes to maternity law. Previously, employees were only legally entitled to additional company benefits (such as company cars and gym memberships) for the 'standard' period of maternity leave, and these benefits could be scaled back during additional maternity leave. Now, employees can take up to a years maternity leave, and they are eligible for any available company benefits for the entire year. Note that these changes also apply to parents who have recently adopted a child (during what is called adoption leave.)

Among your business documents may be a company policy on maternity leave; make sure this is updated, and be certain that your human resources department (or a relevant member of staff) is fully aware of the changes.

Changes to Company Law

There are a number of new company laws coming into force from October, many of which will require changes to your employment contracts and company legal documents.

-New statutory duties for companies have come in concerning company directors. From October, directors must avoid conflicts of interest, declare any personal interests at stake in any piece of company business, and they must also avoid accepting any benefits from third parties.

-It is now illegal to register a company with express purpose of extracting money from an individual, or registering a company name to which another person has a "goodwill" right

-Private companies can now reduce their share capital through the use of a solvency statement

-Annual returns that are made after the 1st of October will include less shareholder information - they are now only required to provide the names of shareholders and not the addresses

-Private companies are no longer prohibited from providing financial assistance to help purchase their own shares

Changes to Trading Law

The main changes to trading law concern doorstep selling and telesales. Essentially, if a customer agrees to purchase an item over £35 in their home (from a door to door salesman or over the telephone) they have a seven day 'cooling off' period during which the purchase can be cancelled. If you are involved in door to door or telesales, make sure your business documents and trading contracts clearly specify that the customer has the right to this seven day cooling off period.

The once lucrative residential real estate and construction market seems to have dried up overnight based on the volume of resumes we're seeing from this sector.

The expression, "cash flow to a business is like blood to the human body," couldn't be truer today. Without cash flow, you can be out of business quickly. Most companies that fail during a recession do so because they don't cut costs fast enough and their cash flow dries up quickly. Look at your cash flow projections for the next three to six months. This should be watched closely. If it appears that your costs are higher than your revenues, it's time to take action before it's too late. The firms that can remain profitable during recessionary periods are the ones that will be a lot stronger when the economy eventually recovers.

Check your accounts receivables and confront slow payers. It's common to see more slow payers during a recession, but slow payers eat into cash flow quickly. Collection calls are not a comfortable thing to do especially with long-term clients, but keeping your receivables down is critical during this period.

If estimator A is just as productive and loyal as estimator B, but costs $10,000 a year less in payroll, then estimator B should go regardless of how long that person has been with you.

Treat the people being layed off with respect. Don't bring groups of people into a room and fire them. This happens a lot and the consequences can be painful. Often, this type of treatment leads to mistrust from those not being layed off. When firing people, it's important to speak to each person individually and never fire someone over the phone or worse, over email.

Be careful when cutting marketing staff. Marketing in the construction and real estate industries is too often perceived by firm principals as an unnecessary overhead expense and too often, this is the area where firms look to cut staff when they should be looking at underutilized personnel in other areas of their firms.

I'm not a consultant who advocates spending more money than everyone else on marketing and I think those who do advocate this approach should stop because they are wrong! The firms with the top brands actually spend less on marketing then their competitors, but this is a topic for another article.

Firms excelling at marketing and branding do, however, understand how to align marketing and their strategic plan. The important thing is to make sure that clients are able to recognize your brand and why they should hire you over your competitors. This is even more critical in a down economy.

Finally, make sure that you update your firm's strategic plan and prepare for the challenges that may lie ahead. Hopefully, the Fed's actions will prevent any type of long-term economic slowdown. Good economy or bad, however, firms that plan and focus on efficiencies should see improved bottom lines as a result.

If you have an Italian restaurant, obviously, you'll want to score for something like "Richmond Italian Restaurant" or even "West End Italian Restaurant," depending on where you're located, not just for "Trattoria Lucca" or whatever the restaurant's name may be.

3. Make them come back often

Make them come back often - and bring all their friends. Don't let those one-time customers that just found you leave without being able to lure them back. You need an automated "customer retrieval system," also known as autoresponder, along with a newsletter.

This sounds simple enough, but in the age of spam complaints, you have to make sure you set it up correctly. If you use my favorite autoresponder, you're practically guaranteed to do so because it simply won't let you do it any other way.

Still, that's only half the equation. For this system to work properly, you also need to know what to write those friendly and enticing emails.

One thing I have found in my years of entrepreneurship is that smart marketing is the key to success. I have worked with many different types of small business owners, entrepreneurs, coaches and consultants from all kinds of industries. No matter what their business is I have found that if the person does not know how to market it, and they do not get help to do so, the business will not survive.

The following 10 items are what I consider a good small business start up checklist. If you are in business or thinking about getting into business, you will want to ensure you have or are working on all of these things constantly. The right mix of these items works well to maximize your exposure, credibility, expert status as well as to build your database and help you make informed marketing decisions.

1. Realistically Defined Target Market - Most small business owners actually have too large of a target market to be realistic and to be able market to them all with their limited time and budget. Most likely, you will want to narrow your market or define your niche even further with specific demographics and psychographics. Be sure to include everyone you have ever known or done business with so that it is easily mail merged for one. In addition, format the database so that you can sort them by hot, warm or cold prospect or referral source. Next, stay in regular contact with your database through effective Database Marketing and Follow Up. This will allow you to be on the top of their minds when the topic of your service and/or product arises in conversation. This process can include letter and email templates, a system for following up with 'hot', 'warm' or 'cold' prospects and ongoing database marketing. Remember, if you do not do a quick follow up after you meet someone, you are missing opportunities and they might forget about you. You want to follow up with everyone you meet within 48 hours of your meeting. In addition, you will want to ensure you continuously follow up. You need to make this system automatic, systematic and practical so that it will get done. Delegate the process it if you have to.

4. Company Web site - Including domain name(s), hosting, reciprocal links, and Internet submission. You are missing sales if you do not have a Web site. However, a professional Web site is a must, not a home-made, amateur site as it will harm your credibility. It does not have to cost a fortune to be professional. The goal is to design it so it will inform, entice and capture your audience.

5. Email Marketing - Distribution lists, program for email marketing, newsletters, promotions - email marketing is the cheapest form of marketing that anyone can do. However, these days there are spam laws that a business must follow as well as email etiquette that you should strive to follow so that you are portrayed as a professional business. There are programs that you can use to truly make your emails pop, but remember you must send people information that your audience wants to read, not just what you want them to read.

6. Effective Ads & Advertising Plan - Including Timeline & Budget - More than likely you are not spending enough money on advertising. If it you advertise in the right places, places that reach your target market, with a good message or headline and for a reasonable length of time you should see good results. If you only try it once, go too small, or have no idea how to design your ad effectively, you will not get results. 7. Professional Marketing Materials - Business Cards, letterhead, envelopes, brochure, sales packet, flyer, and postcard - whatever is necessary to reach your target market. The materials must be professionally designed, printed and presented.

8. Branding - Includes signage like nametags, shirts with logo, vehicle signs, banner, promotional products and giveaways - the more your name is in front of people, the better. You will want people to recognize your brand on everything you do.

9. Networking Plan - Includes any pertinent organizations, associations, chambers or other professional group that brings in referrals or is an effective venue for prospecting or business development. Pick some organizations (between 2 - 5) you believe are the best at either promoting or building your business. Join them and become as active as you possibly can so you become the well-known expert in your field. Volunteer your time generously and most of all put their events on your calendar before any other client meeting or job because these are advertising dollars that you are not spending.

10. Good, Reliable Vendors - Includes industry vendors as well as those for your business development such as printers, mailing houses, delivery services, rental companies. You would be surprised to know that you are probably spending too much money in one or more of these areas right now. Find reliable, inexpensive sources.
